Despite globalisation and the adoption of western dress like jeans and shorts and T Shirts by our ladies folk in different parts of the country , the popularity of Saree continues unabated in the Barak Valley. No doubt the ladies and young girls wear western outfits and dresses of other regions of the country but their love for saree is no less.
This can be observed every year on the day of Saraswati Puja. Teenager girls wait for this special day to wear saree and go to the puja pandals with friends and relatives. There seems to be a connection between saraswati puja and wearing saree. Saraswati is a maiden goddess wearing white saree. Fashion sociologists and historians can make out the significance of this phenomenon in Barak Valley.
It will not be an exaggeration to say that Saraswati Puja is also observed unofficially as the Saree Day in Barak valley.
