The Barak Valley region of Assam offers great prospect for tourism development . The region has tremendous potentiality for developing tourism in various forms: cultural , anthropological, ecotourism and educational tourism. With the conversion of the metre gauge railway line into broad gauge line , the impetus for tourism is all the more realised. There is air connectivity also. Given these conditions, it is high time for aspiring entrepreneurs in Barak Valley to venture into tourism promotion enterprises. The government agencies, NGos in the field of entrepreneurship development and media should guide our young aspiring entrepreneurs to chalk out feasible business plans to promote tourism in the region.
It needs to be mentioned that tourism business is more knowledge and information intensive than other factors. So what is required is some scaffolding to be given to the aspiring entrepreneurs to venture into the field.
Events like Gandhi Mela can be converted into saleable international tourism product. Assam University and NIT Silchar and Silchar Medical College can take initiatives in organising international conferences and seminars and attract scholars from all over the world. Our tea gardens can be converted into make shift resorts and our temples , churches and dargahs can attract religious tourists from different parts of the world.
It is high time to make this ‘ Island Of Peace” a tourist destination and tourism entrepreneurship development is the first step towards this.
